Discussion

  1. Update on Matt's visit and results (Matt, Joann (AS), Charles (AS), Tim)
    1. Overview of what was accomplished
    2. Do we need additional oxygen sensors?  Chlorophyll sensor?
    3. Fixing the TempLine calibration problem

Discussion

·        Great summer, with thanks to all.

·        Typhon right before Matt arrived.  We got to see water mixing and stratified, to measure physical and biological responses.

·        Very strong thermal stratification during day (breaks down at night in top 1.5 meters)

·        To assess lake metabolism, we need to place more oxygen sensors ($1,500) in lake, and a new chlorophyll sensor ($2,000 – just became available).

·        Hen-biau to talk with Charles about possibility to acquire more sensors. Tim in Taiwan in October and could put this in.

·        HB – need to train a person to continue Matt’s sampling (but at a lower frequency – Tim suggests; perhaps Joann could go to lake)

·        Alan to return with Tim from Taiwan in late October

·        TempLine calibration: could have line brought back with Tim, sent back with Alan.

  1. Progress on the web interface (Longjiang, Hsui-Mei, Dave)

Discussion:

·        New web interface: Starter Guide, Lake Graph Part (see attached note from Longjiang, Appendix A)

·        Next Steps: Start web services over next few months (Paul and Longjiang)

  1. Visits by TERN / TRFI Scientists to U.S. (Hen-Biau, Tim, Peter, Chin, Barbara, Sheng-Shan)

Discussion:

    • Time Frame: Mid to late September
    • Projects: Data set (biodiversity data is in database)? Java based development? EML?
    • Status: Information Management: After visit to US, now team of 5 people (use VCR site using open source)
    • Chin may go to XML workshop in UCSB 28 – 29 September. Will he visit UCSD?

  1. Report on July NSC/NSF meeting in Washington and any follow-up (Hen-Biau, Peter, Fang-Pang, Bill, Tim)

·        Peter prepared draft of program to NTL and VCR (Hen-biau; to write proposal

·        Will circulate draft. (See attached note from Peter – Appendix B)

·        Chau-Chin Lin may visit San Diego in late September to further discuss draft. Others are welcome to comment.

  1. East Asia Pacific ILTER meeting in Beijing: When, Who from the Lakes project will go? (Hen-Biau, others)

Discussion:

·        Hen-biau will bring issue of EAP site Lake Metabolism

o       Proposal and progress

o       Slides on lakemetabolism.org web site

·        Hen-biau will ask for more input as needed, but will identify possible other candidate participants (for a January – Feb 2005 meeting in San Diego)

  1. NCHC meeting in October to highlight Eco-Grid accomplishments (Fang-Pang)

Discussion:

    1. Dates? Tentative Dates:

·        Ecological Observation of Grid Sensor Forum 20 – 21 Oct;

·        Press Conference 22 – 23 October Press

    1. Peter, Bill, Tim to attend; schedule visit to YYL (To be determined – depending on whether new equipment ready)

  1. Update on September San Diego meeting and head's up for possible larger meeting this winter (Peter/Tim/Fang-Pang)

Discussion:

·        Send Note to Hen-biau about September meeting (Appendix C)

·        Chin to visit UCSD to discuss proposal by Peter

  1. Postdocs for Lake Metabolism project (Peter, Tim)

Discussion:

·        International Postdocs

o       One possibly from David Hamilton’s Lab

o       Support from pending proposal to a private foundation

o       NSF has support for postdocs – see International Research Fellowship Program (IRFP) http://www.nsf.gov/pubs/2002/nsf02149/nsf02149.htm  (Deadline 12 October 2004)

  1. Report from SIL meeting  (Bill)

·        Bill talked with people in Finland, UK, Italy, New Zealand, Israel, China, Japan, US about project

o       wphu@higlas.ac.cn; iwakuma@ees.hokudai.ac.jp; alon@ocean.org.il; ussaf@ocean.org.il; nishri@ocean.org.il; d.hamilton@waikato.ac.nz; lauri.arvola@helsinki.fi; efr@waikato.ac.nz; dfb@waikato.ac.nz; hans_paerl.unc.edu@nsf.gov; dgg@ceh.ac.uk;

·        In particular  (from David Hamilton)

o       The Kinneret Limnological Lab in Israel is also interested in being involved and they have a set-up very similar to Tim’s, as well as 4 meteorological stations on or around the lake.

o       Gianni Tartari, who heads an Italian program on alpine lakes, expressed interest.  He has also had interactions with Jason Antenucci (U Western Australia) in Australia.

10. INTECOL: - held in Montreal (Aug 2005): Time to suggest symposium (IT meeting)
